The Shanghai Hilton (Shanghai Xierdun) is located at the northwestern edge of the former French Concession on Huashan Road, and stands between two of Shanghai's most popular upmarket shopping streets—Nanjing West Road and Huaihai Road. Guests of the hotel enjoy easy access to Shanghai attractions like Jing'an Temple, as well as convenient proximity to Metro Line 2, plenty of shops and restaurants.

Though comfortable and efficient, the Hilton might not provide the unique Shanghai experience or twenty-first century hotel rush travelers may crave. Built in 1988 as the city's first five-star hotel, the building is beginning to show its age. The increased noise due to proximity to the elevated Yan'an Lu highway somewhat reduces its charm.

The dim sum available at the well-reputed Sui Yuan Restaurant is highly enjoyable, as is the spa—less for the atmosphere than for the skill and strength of its massage therapists. Guests can enjoy authentic Italian at Leanardo's while being treated to something of a contemporary Chinese specialty—imitation, as a Chinese artist copies DaVinci "masterpieces" for the dining audience's enjoyment.

There is also the wonderfully named People on the Water, specializing in Ningbo-style seafood, while the Penthouse Bar offers great views of Shanghai's neon-saturated skyline.
